Black History Month Student-Athlete Spotlight: Angel Johnson

Black History Month Student-Athlete Spotlight: Angel Johnson

Throughout February and beyond, Celt Athletics is thrilled to embrace and honor Black History Month by showcasing the remarkable stories within our student-athlete community. These individuals play an indispensable role in shaping our rich Celt Culture and University experience. Join us today as we spotlight Angel Johnson of Celt Men's Basketball!

Get to Know Angel

Angel is a sophomore on the UST Men's Basketball team and is pursuing a degree in marketing. Hailing from the city of Indianapolis, Indiana, he found himself a second home in Houston. Angel is an invaluable asset to the team, getting the start in all 25 games this season, and playing at least 27 minutes. Last season, Angel was a part of the team that went 16-0 in SCAC play, won the SCAC Title, and advanced to the NCAA National Tournament.

Angel's decision to attend the University of Saint Thomas arises from his ambition to advance both his education and basketball career. Recruited by Head Coach Anthony Medina, Angel discovered that the school aligned well with his future goals. Additionally, apart from basketball and academics, Angel finds joy in pursuing his other hobbies: chess, collecting shoes, and photography.

An important piece of Angel's student-athlete experience is recognizing the platform he has. He utilizes his platform as a student-athlete to raise awareness of his culture by authentically being himself and providing support for others around him.

Black History Month holds great significance for Angel as it commemorates the struggles and triumphs of our ancestors who paved the way for him. It reminds us of the ongoing need to break down barriers and how to come together as a community.

In addition, in the athletic setting, Angel advises younger black student-athletes aspiring to play in college to prioritize developing both their athletic skills and academic performance. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining a strong work ethic despite the challenges they may face along the journey to get where they want to be.

Catch Angel on the court for Men's Basketball this season and beyond!
