UST Men Finish Homecoming Sweep

HOUSTON, Texas – The University of St. Thomas men's basketball coasted to a 77-54 win over the University of the Southwest Saturday on Homecoming.

St. Thomas (17-7, 8-4 Red River Athletic Conference) won its fourth straight game, and swept the season series from Southwest (4-16, 2-11).

The Celts outrebounded the Mustangs, 55-40, and 14 different players scored for UST in the win.

Paul Taulton (JR/Pearland, Texas) scored in the paint to tie the game at 13 at the 11:15 mark. Sam Flores (SR/El Paso, Texas) hit a 3-pointer with 9:16 left in the half to put UST up, 21-13. Keaton Shaw (JR/Mt. Belvieu, Texas) scored on a second chance opportunity at the 6:11 mark to make it 28-17. Nicholas Perez (JR/Katy, Texas) hit two jumpers – the second a triple -- as the Celts extended the lead to 33-19.

Flores scored all 11 of his points in the first half. The Celts bench outscored the Mustangs, 28-2, in the first half.

Paris Marquez (SR/Atascocita, Texas) converted a three-point play with 15:34 to play to give UST a 50-27 lead. Southwest's Nathaniel White converted a three-point play, Keiran Morning knocked down a three, and Tyler Watkins and White each scored off turnovers as the Mustangs pulled within 59-40 at the 9:24 mark.

Michael Alfred (JR/Baton Rogue, Louisiana) scored in the paint, and then sank three free throws to push the Celts up, 64-42. Quashi "Ayo" Phillips scored on a dish from Donald Williams (SO/The Woodlands, Texas) late to put it away.

Orowo Eleyae (SR/Houston, Texas) had 10 points and four rebounds for St. Thomas. Marquez had nine points and four boards. Perez finished with nine points and eight boards.

Emmanuel McNeil had 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Morning scored 10 for the Mustangs.

The Celts will play at Jarvis Christian 7:30 p.m. Friday.
