Celts Fall in Season Opening Thriller

Houston, TX - The University of St. Thomas men's basketball team lost their home opener to Oklahoma Wesleyan University in overtime by a score of 107-104.

Oklahoma Wesleyan came out and hit 10 three-pointers in the first half, which propelled them to a 51-38 lead at the half. The Celts found themselves down by as many as 20 points in the second half before a late run, led by Michael Alfred (JR/Baton Rogue, Louisiana) and Lennard Robinson (JR/Houston, Texas), helped the Celt's force OT. The Celts had a chance to force a second overtime but were unable to get a shot off as time expired.

Michael Alfred had a game-high 22 points in 22 minutes off the bench for the Celts, while Kennard Robinson (JR/Houston, Texas) and Nathan Thormaehlen (JR/Katy, Texas) also chipped in 15 points apiece. Lennard Robinson had a team-high 6 assists to go along with 7 points. As a team, the Celts shot 51% from the field, 48% from three, and 59% from the line. The Celts also forced the Eagles into 28 turnovers, 18 of which were steals.

For the Eagles, KJ Malveau had a team-high 20 points and Isaak Rowe added 17 points to go along with his 8 rebounds. The Eagles shot 49% from the field, 39% from 3, and 89% from the charity stripe.

The 0-1 Celts will look to rebound as they travel to Plainview, Texas next week to take on Panhandle State University and #20 Wayland Baptist University.
