Athletic Training Mission Statement

The University of St. Thomas Sports Medicine Department is committed to providing the highest level of athletic training and sports medicine care possible to our student-athletes, coaches, athletic support staff, and administration. This includes but is not limited to; injury prevention, evaluation, assessment, education, management and rehab: as well as administration. By adhering to the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) Code of Ethics and the Board of Certification (BOC) Standards of Practice, our goals are to keep all student-athletes healthy and return injured athletes to competition as quickly and safely as possible.

UST Athletics has a partnership with the Memorial Hermann | Rockets Sports Medicine Institute and has direct access to their outreach athletic training services. Our athletic training room is well-equipped with therapeutic modalities and rehabilitation equipment. Its resources and services are accessible to all student-athletes and those who fall under our umbrella of care.

ATHLETE AND PARENT INFORMATION

When a student athlete is injured during a practice or game, they are evaluated by a member of the athletic training staff. Initial treatment is administered and if necessary the athlete is referred to a sports medicine physician, orthopedic surgeon, or other medical professional. Athletes desiring medical attention other than that provided by the UST Sports Medicine staff for injuries directly related to sponsored practice or competition may do so only with the clearance of the attending athletic trainer (and their parent/guardian if under 18 years of age).

Injuries or medical conditions NOT related to coach sanctioned, in-season practice or competition are the responsibility of the student athlete or family. General illness, physical education classes, or injuries that occur outside of the student athlete’s sport are the student athlete’s responsibility. The student athlete may, and is encouraged to receive medical care through the attending athletic trainer, but is still responsible for any medical expenses incurred. Please read through the following letter on insurance information. All athletes are required to have medical insurance.

HEALTHY ROSTER

Healthy Roster is a mobile app/website helping to connect you and the coaching staff to the UST Sports Medicine staff as well as manage your injuries and health records. All athletes must create a login and upload your health documents through this program. You should receive an email invitation from UST’s athletic trainers. Please provide our sports medicine staff with the best email. Below is also a short video to explain how to register with Healthy Roster. You must create/update your profile by July 30th of each year.

All athletes are required to complete a pre-participation exam with one of our team physicians as well as the required athletic training room forms prior to the start of participation in intercollegiate activities. The forms can be obtained from our section online and then uploaded into Healthy Roster and online. If you require medical clearance from your attending physician for a health condition or previous injury, please arrange to obtain your release and submit with the other required paperwork. If you have any questions please contact the athletic trainer or coaching staff.

ATHLETE CHECKLIST:

All forms should be submitted to the Athletic Training Office no later than the day before you are set to participate. Forms must be completed in their entirety.
