Celts win 92-79 at Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas concluded a two-game road trip to the Rocky Mountains with a 92-79 win Saturday at Colorado College.

Freddie Ricks III (Cypress, Texas / Cypress Springs) scored a team-high 24 points while Keaton Shaw (Mont Belvieu, Texas / Barbers Hill) chipped in 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Celts (17-1) to their 10th Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win in 11 games.

Cameron Gims (Cypress, Texas / Cy-Fair) and Austin Arnold (Katy, Texas / Taylor) scored 11 points apiece for UST. Gims also recorded a double-double as pulled in 10 rebounds.

CooXooEii Black scored a game-high 28 points for Colorado College (5-12, 3-8 SCAC).

The two teams went back-and-forth as UST led by as many as 13 points in the first half, only to see the Tigers come back and take a lead as large as seven points early in the second half. The Celts needed only a minute to erase that lead, as they scored seven unanswered points between the 12:35 and 11:35 marks of the half to tie the game at 60.

Later, the Celts broke another tie score when they embarked on a 12-1 between the 9:32 and 5:33 marks of the second half to take a 78-67 lead; Gims scored six points during that run. Colorado College would close the gap to five points before UST finished the game with eight unanswered points in the final two minutes.

The Celts shot 44 percent (29 of 66) from the floor and went made 78 percent (25 of 32) of their free throw attempts. UST also won the rebounding battle 46-32.

UST's basketball teams return home for their next two home games. The Celts host Trinity (Texas) on Friday, Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m. The Friday doubleheader also marks UST's Celts 2 Cure games, a Coach to Cure event that helps raise awareness and research money to combat Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
