Both teams were locked in on the defensive end to start the game. The first bucket of the game was not scored until nearly 3 minutes had passed when a running layup by Juan Hood fell. The defensive battle continued as the half went on, as both teams were held to shooting under 40% from the field. UST had the advantage going into half, leading 27-21. Sophomore forward, Calen Anderson led all scorers with 6 points.
The shooting woes from behind the arc continued in the second half for both teams, which made points in the paint that much more crucial. The Celts outscored Trinity 40-24 in the paint and outrebounded them by 10 boards. Freshman Adam Kanafani dominated the inside as he posted 16 points and 8 rebounds in the second half alone.
After being down by 6 points with nearly 4 minutes to go, the Celts stormed back to take the lead with 49 seconds to go. A steal by Christian Alaekwe and four straight free throws from Zach Golaszewski iced the game and gave UST a 61-53 victory over the Tigers.
The Celts hope to continue to move in the same direction tomorrow as the take on Trinity University again at 4:00PM.
