Men's Basketball Edged in Thriller Against Non-Conference Hardin Simmons

Men's Basketball Edged in Thriller Against Non-Conference Hardin Simmons

After two hard-fought periods, men's basketball was edged in their non-conference finale against Hardin Simmons 66-63. After besting the Celts by five in the first half, the Cowboys held that lead into the game's final seconds.

In the first half, the Celts struggled to convert any shots, shooting just 33 percent from the floor. This led to just 25 points in 20 minutes. Hardin Simmons was able to take advantage of this, and jumped out to a large 13 point lead 14 minutes in, yet St. Thomas would not go away. Without having the lead at any point in the first half, the Celts had a nine-point run to keep themselves in contention down just five 30-25 at the half. The bench also came up huge with 20 points, as Ricky Altamirano drained two three-pointers in the effort. In the second half, Celt shooting improved to 45 percent, and Zack Golaszewski came alive with a 14 point second half. This helped the Celts tie the game three times, yet Hardin Simmons responded each time with a bucket of their own to regain the lead. Then, clutch free throws from the Cowboys helped them secure victory 66-63, just seconds away from a Celt comeback.

Offensively, Zack Golaszewski continued his offensive tear leading the Celts with 14 points, tying for the game high with Ricky Altamirano off the bench. Angel Johnson notched nine rebounds and three steals for a stellar defensive effort, while Calvin Williams IV dished out three assists in the game.
