Celts shoot past Colorado College to improve to 10-0

HOUSTON – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas stretched their season-long winning streak to 10 games Monday with a 102-92 win over Colorado College.

At UST's Jerabeck Center, all five Celts starters scored in double-figures as St. Thomas reached the century mark for the fourth time this season.

Senior guard Kennard Robinson (Houston, Texas / Sam Houston MSTC) led the way for the Celts, scoring 20 points and handing out 12 assists, one short of his career high. Cameron Gims (Cypress, Texas / Cy-Fair HS) also tallied a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Freddie Ricks III (Cypress, Texas / Cypress Springs HS) and Nathan Thormaehlen (Katy, Texas / Katy HS) scored 21 points apiece for the Celts (10-0, 4-0 SCAC). Thormaehlen shot 8-of-11 from the field and was 5-of-7 from 3-point range.

Joshua Sanchez (McAllen, Texas / McAllen Memorial HS) chipped in 10 points for the Celts.

For the visitors, CooXooEii Black and Aaron Acosta scored 22 points apiece for Colorado College (2-8), which remained winless in four Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference games.

The Celts shot 61 percent (39 of 64) from the floor during the game. UST starters shot 67 percent (32 of 48) from the field.

UST jumped out to a quick 14-4 lead less than four minutes into the game, and later used a 12-0 run to establish a 32-11 lead with 10:36 remaining in the first half.

Colorado College trimmed UST's lead to 12 points by halftime, as the Celts took a 57-45 lead into the locker room. UST opened the second period with a 15-2 run to build its lead back to 25 points with 16:41 remaining in the contest; the Celts would lead by as many as 28 points in the second half.

Though the lead proved to be too much to overcome, the visiting Tigers continued to chip away at it thanks to their own 3-point shooting. Colorado College shot 52 percent from 3-point range (13 of 25). Meanwhile, the Celts shot 57 percent (16 of 28) from 3-point range for the game.

The Celts return to action Friday, Jan. 3, when they head to San Antonio to face Trinity. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
