Celts remain undefeated after 88-64 win at Trinity

SAN ANTONIO – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas remained undefeated Friday after winning 88-64 at Trinity.

Cameron Gims (SO/Cypress, Texas) scored 15 points to lead five Celts scoring in double-figures Friday. The Celts (11-0, 5-0 SCAC) maintained their place atop the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings.

Nathan Ghavidel (FR/Boerne, Texas) and Austin Arnold (FR/Katy, Texas) came off the UST bench to score 12 points apiece. Arnold was 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Christian Alaekwe (JR/Fresno, Texas) scored 11 points off the bench on 5-of-6 shooting, while Nathan Thormaehlen (SR/Katy, Texas) also chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds.

Luke Stuart and Ben Hanley scored 13 points each for Trinity (3-7, 1-2 SCAC).

The two teams battled back-and-forth for most of the first half as neither team was able to build more than a five-point lead. The Celts took control of the game with five minutes remaining in the first half, as they finished the period outscoring Trinity 18-2; the Celts took a 46-35 lead into halftime.

Trinity tried to keep pace in the second half, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Ghavidel at the 14:03 and 13:39 marks of the period built UST's lead to 19 points at 58-39. Only once would Trinity get within 14 points for the remainder of the contest.

The Celts shot 44.3 percent (31 of 70) from the field and made 39.5 percent (15 of 38) of their 3-point attempts.

UST returns to action Saturday when the Celts travel to Kerrville in the Texas Hill Country to face Schreiner. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
