Celts sizzle from 3-point range in 104-72 win over Trinity

HOUSTON – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas drained a season-high 22 3-pointers Friday as they cruised to a 104-72 win over Trinity (Texas).

Senior post Nathan Thormaehlen (Katy, Texas / Katy) scored a game-high 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting from 3-point range to lead four Celts players in double-figures. Thormaehlen was 7-of-10 from 3-point in the first half.

The win was the Celts' 18th in 19 games this season; they remained atop the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with an 11-1 league record.

Cameron Gims (Cypress, Texas / Cy-Fair) scored 16 points for the Celts, while Nathan Ghavidel (Boerne, Texas / Champion) chipped in 15 points off the bench thanks to a 5-of-7 showing from the 3-point arc. Austin Arnold (Katy, Texas / Taylor) scored 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from 3-point range in the first half.

The Celts began to pull away from Trinity midway through the first period. At one point, Thormaehlen knocked down five consecutive 3-pointers on six UST trips down the floor. UST shot 65 percent (15 of 23) from 3-point range in the first half, and 49 percent (22 of 45) for the game.

The Celts led by as many as 35 points in the second half.

Kennard Robinson (Houston, Texas / Sam Houston MSTC) scored nine points and tied his season high for assists with 12 helpers.

The Friday doubleheader marked UST's Celts 2 Cure games, a Coach to Cure event that helps raise awareness and research money to combat Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Click here to see photo galleries from the event.
