Celts Fall to Schreiner, 87-85

Men's Basketball fell in their conference home opener after a hard-fought contest with Schreiner would teeter towards the Mountaineers, 87-85.

Andrew Nguyen would sink a go-ahead layup with just under 40 seconds remaining, but a late put back by the Mountaineers would be enough to edge the Celts.

St. Thomas would struggle to get their offense clicking early, resulting in a double-digit deficit after just three minutes of play. The Celts would eventually find their groove and battle back to take a one-point lead with ten minutes left in the period. Unfortunately, this would be the only lead of the half for the Celts, as the Mountaineers would regain control and push their advantage to seven points heading into the break.

To open the second half, the Celts would score seven unanswered points to erase Schreiner's lead. With the count knotted up at 40, both teams would trade blows for the remainder of the game. St. Thomas would tie the game seven times in the final frame but could never surpass the Mountaineers.

Christian Alaekwe would lead the Celts with 19 points, ten of which would come in the second half. Also chipping in ten second half points would be Andrew Nguyen, who would finish with 16 points in his first start. Nguyen would also dish out a season-high eight assists.
