Early start help Celts rise over Roos

Early start help Celts rise over Roos

Women's basketball picks up their first conference win of the season with a 61-51 win over the Austin College Roos. Alexya Castillo led the team with 17 points to help St. Thomas capture their first SCAC win this season.

The Celts wasted no time as from the opening tip they hit shot after shot for a 16-4 run to start the game. Opening up the second quarter a couple of missed shots and turnovers by the Celts helped the Roos climb back into the game as they were able to hit a hot streak and go on a 15-2 run to take the lead 27-26. However, the half ended with back-to-back shots from Ce'Briya Bell and Hayden Morin to help St. Thomas regain the lead and go up 30-27 at halftime.

As the second half began it was all St. Thomas from the start.  Alexya Castillo hit a big three-pointer to give the Celts a run of 14-2 making it 44-29 early into the third quarter. From there, the Celts never let Austin College back into the game. Strong defense from the Celts helped put the Roos away as they put up 13 steals and six blocks and as time expired the Celts would win 61-51.

Offensively, senior Alexya Castillo led the team with 17 points and 5 rebounds. Ce'Briya Bell and Hayden Morin both totaled nine as well.

Up next, Women's Basketball faces of against the University of Dallas tomorrow December 31st at 1pm here at the JAAC.  Support your Celts as they look to extend their winning streak.
