Five Celts In Double Figures as St. Thomas Falls to Sul Ross

In the final game of non-conference play, Women's Basketball fell to Sul Ross St. University. Strong performances from Hayden Morin and Taytum Poppe proved to be big help for the celts, but fell short 77-79.

Opening the game the Celts traded three-point shots with the Lobos as the Celts were able to get out to a 11-10 lead early in the game. The Lobos followed up this hot start by shutting down St. Thomas by going on a 13-2 run to end the first quarter as Sul Ross was able to jump out to a comfortable 23-13 lead. Hayden Morin kickstarted the second quarter with a three pointer but was enough to make a scratch into the Lobos lead as Sul Ross was able to continue their hot streak hitting a couple big baskets to increase their lead 30-18. As the half came to an end, the Celts were able to spark a flame from big three pointers from Audrey Hernandez and Nia McGee and go on a 12-4 run to bring St. Thomas back into the game as they trailed only 37-33 at the half. In the second half the Celts continued their hot streak as they were able to bring the Lobos lead down to one only trailing 42-41 early in the third quarter.  The Celts and Lobos then began to trade baskets as Sul Ross would close out the quarter 61-56. A big three pointer from Alexya Castillo would help St. Thomas tie the game at 75 then a huge shot from Nia McGee gave the Celts the lead 77-75. The late come back from St. Thomas would fall short as the Lobos would hit two big shots with seconds left to regain the lead and eventually win the game.

Offensively, the Celts had five players with double figures. Hayden Morin led the team with 15, Taytum Poppe scored 13, and Alexya Castillo with 11. Nia Mcgee, and Audrey Hernandez both scored 13 while coming off the bench.
