Women's Basketball falls to Millsaps 78-70

Women's Basketball fell to 1-4 after today's game against the Millsaps College Majors. Despite a strong start, Millsaps had a stellar second quarter and half to take control of the game.

Three lead changes dictated the flow of the first quarter, as both teams converted baskets early. Both the Celts and Majors went on six point runs, however at the end of the first, it was St. Thomas who came out on top. Fueled by three pointers from Hayden Morin and Alexya Castillo, the Celts entered the second quarter with a 14-10 lead. However, Millsaps responded with tough defense to not let St. Thomas score. In turn, the Celts played aggressive defense which led to eight converted free throws for Millsaps. When all was said and done in the second, the majors outscored the Celts 24-12, and took a 34-26 lead into the locker room at halftime. In the third quarter both teams nearly went point for point, as Millsaps scored 24, and St. Thomas added 23. Fueled by an 11, point scoring run by the Celts, the Celts did their best to keep things close, heading into the fourth trailing 58-49. In the fourth quarter Millsaps kept piling to the score and jumped out to as large as an 11 point lead, powered by six fast breaks. Then as the clock winded down, they secured victory 78-70.

Offensively, Alexya Castillo had herself a day with 21 points in the game and also dished out a team high three assists with Aailyah Macias. Defensively, Jharyn Craig tabbed eight rebounds, Hayden Morin had two steals, and Taytum Poppe blocked two shots.

Up next, the Celts travel to Brownsville, Texas to face Howard Payne in a ASC Crossover event as they will also play Sul Ross. Games will be played on Saturday and Sunday.
