Celts Edged By LeTourneau in Overtime

The UST Celts were edged by the LETU Yellowjackets in overtime tonight at the JAAC. Despite a three point lead with seconds remaining in the game, Letourneau forced overtime and 68-61.

In the first quarter, the Celts and the Yellowjackets traded points early. However with the score 8-4 in favor of St. Thomas both teams were unable to convert baskets for awhile. Then the Celts lead only grew, as late quarter buckets put them ahead at the end of the first 18-12. In the second quarter, St. Thomas and Letourneau only added to their score as each team only notched 13 points. With this, both teams headed into the locker room with the score 31-25.

To start off the second half, the Yellowjackets opened with an 7-4 run as they got within three at 35-32.  St. Thomas responded and tacked on six more points before the third quarter was over. But quick baskets from Letourneau put them within two to go into the fourth with only a two point deficit 41-39. In the fourth, a foul by the Celts allowed a tie game to be made at 41 apiece. This was before the Yellowjackets eventually took the lead at 47-46. Both teams then got hot with neither one wanting to give an inch. Then with a three point St. Thomas lead Letourneau would add a clutch three pointer to tie the game 56-56.

Overtime saw the Celts get on the board first with a three pointer from Laura Jones, yet three late fouls from St. Thomas was costly. Letourneau made six free throws in the period followed with a late layup to eventually secure victory as they won 68-61.

Up next, St. Thomas will host the SCAC Vs SAA Crossover Tournament. The event will take place at home in the JAAC and will feature Schreiner, Millsaps, and Birmingham Southern.
