Celts Edge Pirates, 53-50

Celts Edge Pirates, 53-50

Playing in their second game in three days, St. Thomas and Southwestern would yet again come down to the wire. The Celts would claim their second straight victory over the Pirates, 53-50.

St. Thomas would open the game firing, shooting 44 percent from the floor in the first quarter. Alexya Castillo, coming off a career-high 24 points, would pick up where she left off with eight points in the opening frame. The Celts would fluster the Pirates, taking the 16-9 advantage.

Southwestern would storm back in the second quarter, erasing their deficit in just five minutes of action. However, the Celts would hang onto their lead heading into the break in part to Ravyn Ellis' layup with just under a minute remaining.

In a competitive third period, which was a one-possession contest for the nearly all 10 minutes, St. Thomas would outscore Southwestern 11-7. Jade Evans' short corner jumper with 36 seconds remaining would give the Celts a five-point lead heading into the final quarter.

While Southwestern would come to within one-point multiple times, St. Thomas would hold onto their lead for the entirety of the fourth quarter. Nia McGee would bring the Celts' lead to three points with 10 seconds of action left. A last second three-point look by the Pirates wouldn't connect as St. Thomas secured the home win.

Alexya Castillo would lead all scorers with 14 points, nailing three triples in 37 minutes of action. Flirting with a double-double would be Olivia Anga, logging 11 points and nine rebounds.
