Celts overwhelm LeTourneau 77-60

LONGVIEW, Texas – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas played their third game in as many days Sunday, claiming 77-60 win at LeTourneau.

Sheridan Hopkins (SR/Galveston, Texas) scored a game-high 26 points on 9-of-17 shooting, while also pulling in eight rebounds. Bresha Orange (SR/Longview, Texas) added 15 points for the Celts (2-1).

LeTourneau's Keauna Whitfield scored 15 points for the YellowJackets, who were playing their season-opening game Sunday.

After a high-scoring first period, the Celts asserted themselves late in the second quarter with seven unanswered points over a 50-second span. Yazmine Kellough (SO/Oak Ridge, Texas)'s with a 1:01 left to play in the half gave the Celts a 38-29 lead and capped the seven-point run; Hopkins scored the other five points during that stretch.

UST led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter, but nearly saw their lead evaporate. The Jackets pieced together 12 unanswered points midway through the period to cut UST's lead to 47-46. However, the Celts regrouped and went on a 13-0 run between the 3:51 and 0:34-marks of the period; Aerial Starks (SO/Houston, Texas), Jazz Taylor (SR/Duncanville, Texas), and Micayla Hamilton (FR/Richmond, Texas) all knocked down 3-pointers during that stretch.

The YellowJackets would not cut UST's lead to single digits for the remainder of the game. The Celts led by as many as 22 points in the fourth quarter.

Hamilton and Olivia Anga (SO/Rosharon, Texas) scored eight points apiece for the Celts. Starks chipped in seven points while Taylor scored six points for UST.

The Celts return to action Tuesday when they play their home opener against Arlington Baptist. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. and is the first game of a women's-and-men's doubleheader between the two schools.
