Seay and the Celts Split Opening Doubleheader at Schreiner

Baseball opened up its SCAC series with Schreiner with a doubleheader this Friday afternoon. After winning the first game 15-9, the Celts were edged 5-4 in the day's finale to heading into tomorrow's finale.

Game 1 UST 15 SCH 9

St. Thomas got off to a strong start, scoring two runs in the first inning courtesy of a powerful home run by Mason Seay. However, Schreiner quickly responded in the second inning, tying the game at 2-2 with key hits from Seth Joseph and Tyler Juarez.

The back-and-forth battle continued as both teams exchanged runs in the following innings. St. Thomas regained the lead in the third inning, but Schreiner surged ahead with a four-run outburst in the fourth inning, taking a 6-4 lead.

St. Thomas unleashed a barrage of offense in the fifth inning, exploding for six runs to reclaim the lead. Dylan Lamb and Mason Seay led the charge with impressive hitting performances, including home runs and extra-base hits.

Despite Schreiner's efforts to rally late in the game, St. Thomas maintained their offensive momentum, adding additional runs in the eighth and ninth innings to secure the victory.

Game 2 UST 4 SCH 5

Schreiner got off to a strong start in the first inning, capitalizing on an unearned run before adding to their lead in the second inning with a solo home run by Aidan Warren.

St. Thomas struggled to generate offense against Schreiner's pitching, failing to score through the first eight innings of the game. Schreiner continued to apply pressure, adding another run in the sixth inning and extending their lead to 5-0 in the eighth inning.

However, St. Thomas mounted a late comeback effort in the ninth inning. Alex Trinh ignited the rally with a triple, driving in a run to put St. Thomas on the scoreboard. Kyle Bearden followed up with a single, driving in Trinh to cut the deficit to 5-2. Dillon McKee then delivered a clutch hit, driving in two more runs to bring St. Thomas within one run of tying the game.

Despite their late surge, St. Thomas ultimately fell short as Schreiner's pitching held on to secure the victory.

Mason Seay emerged as a standout performer for the Celts in today's games, showcasing an impressive display of skill and power. With a remarkable tally of 6 hits across both matches, including 2 powerful home runs, Seay proved to be a formidable presence on the field. Additionally, his keen eye at the plate earned him 2 walks, further contributing to his impactful performance. As the series finale approaches, the senior catcher is poised to harness this momentum, aiming to propel the Celts to a .500 record in conference play.
