Celts defeat Minnesota-Morris, fall to Schreiner

TOMBALL, Texas – The University of St. Thomas baseball team concluded play at the UST Celt Classic on Saturday with a split of their two games at the Premier Baseball facility.

The Celts (5-9) defeated Minnesota–Morris 8-3 in their daytime contest before falling 15-11 to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Schreiner in a non-conference tilt.

UST's players will have some time to recover as the Celts are idle this week. They return to action Friday, March 6, when they open a three-game series against Doane (Neb.). The three games on March 6 and 7 will be played at Husky Field on the campus of Houston Baptist University.

Celts 8, Minnesota–Morris 3

Kalob Bacak (SO/Spring, Texas) picked up his second win of the season and Leo Galvan (SO/Baytown, Texas) smacked two home runs as the Celts took their second consecutive game from the visiting Cougars.

After having claimed his place in UST baseball lore with the first victory in the modern era of the program, Bacak became the first pitcher since 1969 with multiple victories in a season as he tossed eight innings while allowing three earned runs. The lefty from Spring, Texas, struck out four batters in the game.

Bacak's teammates gave him plenty of support and gave him a 3-0 lead after one inning. Galvan knocked a two-run homer to score himself and Jason Brown (FR/Sugar Land, Texas); Galvan's blast came two batters after Kyle Bearden (FR/Spring, Texas) opened the scoring with a solo home run.

UMM tied by the third inning, but the Celts took the lead for good when they plated three more runs in the fifth. Adam Scharf (JR/Joliet, Ill.)'s two-RBI single through the right side scored Brown and Galvan; Scharf later moved around the bases and came home on a wild pitch.

Galvan knocked two more RBIs in the sixth with his second home run that again scored Brown ahead of him. A sophomore from Baytown, Texas, Galvan became the first Celt in the modern era with a multiple-home run game.

For the game, Galvan went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Kyle Bearden went 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Jackson Rodgers (FR/Montgomery, Texas) and Cesar Arcizo (JR/Brookshire, Texas) also knocked two hits in the game.

UST's Pierce Taylor (FR/Pearland, Texas) tossed a scoreless ninth inning for the Celts.

Schreiner 15, Celts 11

An eight-run second inning gave Schreiner a nine-run lead and forced the Celts to play catch-up for the duration of the game.

Trailing 11-3 in the fifth inning, Hunter Pachal (FR/Conroe, Texas) claimed another first in the baseball program's modern era when he knocked a grand slam to left field; Bearden, Brown and Galvan scored ahead of him.

Pachal went 3-for-3 in the game. Arcizo and Noah Martinez (JR/New Braunfels, Texas) each had two RBIs for the Celts.
