Baseball Opens Season With a Win Over Howard Payne

Baseball Opens Season With a Win Over Howard Payne

The UST Baseball team opened up their 2021 campaign as they hosted the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets. The contest was called in the fifth inning due to inclement weather, but the 9-5 lead the Celts constructed ensured them the victory.

UST's offense was clicking on all cylinders early as they would plate the first three runs of the game. Parker Edwards' three-run bomb in the bottom of the first would spark the Celts energy for the rest of the contest. However, shortly after the Yellow Jackets would answer with an explosive four-run second inning to regain control.

As the Celts trailed entering the bottom of the second, a Kyle Bearden single would drive in Noah Martinez to knot the score up at four. Caleb Edmonds would then provide some scoring of his with a three-run home run to put UST up three. To cap off this monstrous inning, a Hunter Pachal RBI double would give the Celts an 8-4 advantage.

Parker Edwards yet again would leave his mark on this game. To solidify their lead, Edwards would go yard for the second time today. He is only the second player in UST history to hit multiple home runs in the same game.

Edwards would go 2-2, hitting two home runs and recording four RBIs. Hunter Pachal would also go 2-2 while driving in one run. Defensively, RHP Landon Murray would strike out seven batters in his first game with the Celts.

The Celts will be back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader against Howard Payne.
