No. 21 Trinity Sweeps Doubleheader from Celts

SAN ANTONIO – The Trinity Tigers completed a weekend sweep of the University of St. Thomas baseball team Saturday as they took both games of a doubleheader.

Trinity (20-7, 11-1 SCAC), ranked 21st in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25 poll, won Saturday's opener 13-3 before outlasting the Celts in a game two slugfest by a score of 15-10.

In the opening game, the Tigers scored the first eight runs over four innings before the Celts (11-19, 5-7 SCAC) got on the scoreboard with an RBI double from Israel Fields to that scored Jason Brown. Fields had two hits in the game.

The Celts got a two-run home run from Erik Garza in the top of the seventh to make the score 12-3. Trinity ended the game in the bottom of the eighth when they scored a wild pitch that gave the Tigers a 10-run lead.

Garza hit two home runs Saturday, with his three-run blast in game two highlighting a seven-run first inning for the Celts. Knight Newcomb went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the game.

The Celts were unable to hold onto their big lead in the second game, as the Tigers scored in every inning except the sixth and reclaimed a 10-9 lead after four innings. Trinity built a 14-9 lead after seven innings of play.

The losses dropped St. Thomas into a fourth-place tie with Southwestern (Texas) in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with identical 5-7 league records. TLU and Trinity – UST's most recent opponents – are tied for first place in the SCAC.

UST returns to action Friday, April 15, when the Celts open a three-game home series against Southwestern. All three of the weekend's games will be played at Houston Baptist University.
