Baseball Drops Game 2 & 3 to Hardin Simmons

To close out non-conference play, baseball hosted Hardin Simmons in a Saturday doubleheader. Throughout the day, the Celts struggled to generate any offense, leading to two losses at Reckling Park.

Game 1 UST 1 HSU 9

Hardin-Simmons wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, scoring two runs in the first inning. Jacob Hollingsworth drove in Luke Kirkbride with a single to center field, followed by a bases-loaded walk to Gannon Azios, allowing Jett Forrest to cross the plate.

St. Thomas responded in the second inning with a run of their own when Israel Fields singled to left field, bringing Jarod Smith home, narrowing the gap to 2-1.

However, Hardin-Simmons extended their lead in the fifth inning with Sam Buchkowski's two-RBI single, scoring Forrest and Kyler Reed, making it 4-1.

Hardin-Simmons broke the game open in the sixth inning, scoring five more runs. Forrest's double to left field brought in two more runs, followed by Buchkowski's RBI single. Karson Leatherwood's sacrifice fly and Nick Ellington's RBI single further padded their lead, bringing the score to 9-1.

Hardin-Simmons' pitchers, led by Brandon Girod, delivered a stellar performance, limiting St. Thomas to just one run on three hits. Girod pitched six innings, allowing only three hits and one earned run while striking out nine batters.

St. Thomas struggled to generate offense against Hardin-Simmons' pitching, managing just one run despite putting runners on base throughout the game.

Game 2 UST 3 HSU 10

Hardin-Simmons wasted no time asserting their dominance, piling on six runs in the first inning. The scoring spree began with Gavin Boedeker's two-RBI single, followed by a series of defensive errors by St. Thomas that allowed additional runs to cross the plate. Luke Kirkbride capped off the inning with a single to left field, extending the lead to 6-0.

St. Thomas fought back in the second inning, with AJ Gonzales launching a solo home run and Travis Gully driving in Jackson Rodgers with a single, cutting the deficit to 6-2.

Hardin-Simmons added two more runs in the third inning, courtesy of Karson Leatherwood's RBI single and Jacob Hollingsworth's run-scoring hit, pushing the lead to 8-2.

The game settled into a pitching duel until the seventh inning when Hardin-Simmons struck again. Kyler Reed's RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to Sam Buchkowski extended the lead to 10-2.

St. Thomas managed to scrape together one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning, with Lance Khan's sacrifice fly bringing Rey Izaguirre home, but it was not enough to mount a comeback.

Hardin-Simmons' pitching, led by Tristan Boedecker, was effective in keeping St. Thomas' offense in check. Boedecker pitched seven solid innings, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out six batters.

In contrast, St. Thomas struggled to contain Hardin-Simmons' potent offense, committing three errors that contributed to their defeat.
