Softball Gets Two Wins Over Centenary

In the opening two games against Centenary, St. Thomas swept the day behind timely hitting and pitching.

Game One UST 6 CEN 1

Centenary managed to get on the board early with a unique play in the first inning, capitalizing on a steal of home by Mackenzie Cox to take a 1-0 lead. However, St. Thomas quickly responded with a powerful offensive display in the bottom of the inning. Jaelyn Simmons smashed a two-run homer, propelling St. Thomas into a 2-1 lead.

St. Thomas continued to assert their dominance, adding to their lead in the third inning with a patient at-bat by Gabby Davila, who drew a bases-loaded walk, bringing in a run. Another run came in on a wild pitch, extending St. Thomas's lead to 4-1.

In the fourth inning, St. Thomas capitalized on Centenary's defensive miscues, with Chloe Bennett reaching base on an error, allowing two more runs to score.

Pitcher Allison Hughes was stellar on the mound for St. Thomas, holding Centenary to just one run while scattering five hits over seven innings of work. Hughes's strong performance helped secure the victory for St. Thomas, setting a positive tone for the start of their season.

Game Two UST 12 CEN 10

The game started with both teams exchanging blows, as Centenary managed to take an early lead with River Boultinghouse's RBI single, followed by Morgan Dawson's RBI single, putting them up 2-0. However, St. Thomas quickly responded with Rebecca Archibald's RBI single and a wild pitch, allowing two more runs to score, giving St. Thomas a 3-2 lead at the end of the first inning.

St. Thomas continued their offensive onslaught in the second inning, with Chloe Bennett's two-run single and Jaelyn Simmons's steal of home extending their lead to 6-2. They added two more runs in the third inning, courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Bennett and a wild pitch, pushing their lead to 10-4.

However, Centenary staged a comeback in the fourth inning, fueled by Catherine Stokes's RBI single and Isabelle Dominguez's two-run double, narrowing the gap to 10-8. St. Thomas responded with Archibald's RBI single in the bottom of the inning, but Centenary kept the pressure on with Dominguez's two-run double in the fifth inning, bringing the score to 11-10.

In the end, St. Thomas held on for the win, thanks to Archibald's clutch RBI single in the sixth inning, securing the 12-10 victory. It was a thrilling back-and-forth battle, with both teams displaying impressive offensive performances throughout the game.
