Softball Splits Games 2 & 3 With Southwestern

After a hard faught day of Softball, the Celts split games two and three with the Pirates this Friday afternoon. When the series concluded, St. Thomas' conference mark is now 6-3.

Game 2: UST 11 SU 3

The game started with St. Thomas quickly asserting their dominance, as they jumped to an early lead in the first inning. Grace Torres delivered a clutch single to left field, bringing in both Jaelyn Simmons and Rebecca Archibald to give St. Thomas a 2-0 advantage.

St. Thomas extended their lead in the third inning when Chloe Bennett singled to center field, allowing Simmons to score, pushing their lead to 3-0.

Southwestern fought back in the fourth inning, scoring two runs to narrow the gap. Riley Glenn-Millhouse hit a sacrifice fly to center field, driving in Emily Nevarez. Brooke Yanta followed up with a single to left field, bringing in Kaydence Garza to make it a 3-2 game.

St. Thomas responded immediately in the bottom of the fourth, as Haley Lupian's single to first base brought in Gabby Davila, restoring their two-run lead at 4-2.

In the fifth inning, Southwestern managed to score another run when Nevarez hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Ashtyn Aldrete to score, cutting the deficit to 4-3.

However, St. Thomas pulled away in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs to extend their lead. Lindsey Gonzalez's sacrifice fly brought in Isabelle Charles, followed by a single from Davila that brought in Charles. Archibald then singled to the pitcher, bringing in Davila and extending St. Thomas' lead to 7-3.

St. Thomas continued their offensive onslaught in the sixth inning, adding four more runs to their tally. Bennett's double brought in Simmons, and a stolen base by Gonzalez led to a throwing error that allowed Bennett to score. Davila then singled to bring in Gonzalez, and Izabella Hernandez capitalized on an error to bring in Davila, giving St. Thomas an 11-3 lead.

With solid pitching from Allison Hughes and an explosive offense, St. Thomas secured a convincing win over Southwestern.

Game 3: UST 0 SU 2

The game started with a defensive battle, as both teams showcased strong pitching and fielding. Southwestern managed to break the deadlock in the first inning when Sophia Ytuarte reached base on a fielder's choice, allowing Meghan McCarthy to score and giving Southwestern an early 1-0 lead.

Throughout the game, both pitchers, Sophia Ytuarte for Southwestern and Victoria Sossaman for St. Thomas, delivered impressive performances, keeping the opposing offenses in check.

Southwestern extended their lead in the fifth inning due to a defensive error by St. Thomas. Ytuarte reached base on an error, enabling Riley Glenn-Millhouse to score, increasing Southwestern's lead to 2-0.

Despite several scoring opportunities, St. Thomas couldn't capitalize against Southwestern's strong defense.
