Men's Golf In 10th Place After Day One of NCAA Championships

After completion of the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championships, the Celts currently sit at 10th place, firing a score of 292 and +4 over par. St. Thomas was led by senior Jonathan Miller, who is currently tied for second overall. 

Jonathan Miller had a monster first round firing a 68 (-4) on the course. The senior's scorecard included seven birdies and nine pars to lock in the second-best score of the tournament. Behind him was Cade Kiser, who fired an even score of 72 in the first round of action. Kiser finished 25th with 12 pars and three birdies. Two of those birdies were in the back nine of the course, as he constantly lowered his score throughout the tournament. Senior Henry Phavorachit was the next Celt to hit the links. He struggled on the first nine holes but responded with three straight birdies on 15-17 to lower his score to 73 (+1) to lock in 37th place. 

Also competing was a pair of juniors for St. Thomas. Patrick Smetek finished with a 79 (+7) and carded a key birdie on hole two along with ten pars. Rounding out competitors for the Celts was Cameron Curtis. Curtis fired an 81 (+9) with a scorecard that included ten pars. 

With all scores combined, the Celts finished with a team score of 292 (+4), good for 10th place. This is just two strokes behind SCAC rival Trinity University.   

Notable First-Round Stats:

  • As a team on par three holes, St. Thomas is fifth overall with a scoring average of 3.15 in the first round of action

  • St. Thomas is fifth overall in birdies with 14 total in the first round

  • Jonathan Miller leads the tournament with seven birdies 

  • On par three holes, Jonathan Miller led all golfers with a scoring average of 2.50

  • On par four holes, seniors Jonathan Miller, Cade Kiser, and Henry Phavorachit each shot an impressive 4.10 scoring average, good for +1 overall

  • On par five holes, senior Jonathan Miller's scoring average of 4.25 was good for second overall, Cade Kiser's 4.50 was good for third overall

  • There are 220 Total Golfers in the Tournament
