Men's Golf In First After Day One of SCAC Championships

Men's Golf opened up the SCAC Championships today with two action packed rounds. After two rounds of competitive golf, four Celts sit in the top ten give St. Thomas a one stroke lead at first place. 

Patrick Smetek led all Celt golfers firing rounds of 72 (E) and 75 (+3) on day one. Smetek was consistent with 25 pars and five birdies to lock in fifth place. Then in sixth place, two Celts tied for the spot. Senior Jonathan Miller fired rounds of 73 (+1) and 75 (+3) as he had eight birdies and 18 pars. Next was Cameron Curtis who had 20 pars and seven pars to finish with scores of 72 (E) and 76 (+4) rounding out the St. Thomas top three. 

Sitting in ninth place was senior Cade Kiser. Kiser finished in the top ten after scoring a 74 (+2) and 75 (+3). He had a total of four birdies and 23 pars to wrap up his day. Also competing was senior Henry Phavorachit who improved his round one from 81 (+9) to 74 (+2) in round two. Powered by 11 pars and five birdies in the second round, Henry improve his placing by 14 spots to finish 17th. Lastly, Jackson Murff finished tied for 38th after firing rounds of 87 (+15) and 88 (+16). Murff had 13 pars and a birdie across two rounds. 

With all scores combined, St. Thomas had a team score of 590, and currently leads the field narrowily by one stroke. 

Notable Stats:

  • The Celts cleaned up their par 5 holes and lead the tournament with a combined scoring average of 4.94 and total -3 under par

  • As a team, the Celts shot +17 on par three holes, just one stroke behind first (+16)

  • St. Thomas leads all teams with 29 birdies in the tournament thus far

  • Patrick Smetek led all competing golfers shooting -4 on par five holes, and Jonathan Miller is right behind him a -3 on par five holes

  • Jonathan Miller is second overall in birdies with eight and Cameron Curtis is third with seven

  • Patrick Smetek is fifth overall in pars with 25

  • Cade Kiser is third overall on par three holes with a scoring average of 3.13 and +1
