Miller and the Celts Take First Place at the Linda Lowery Invitational

AUSTIN – The University of St. Thomas men's golf team took first place in the team and individual competitions this week at the Linda Lowery Invitational hosted by Concordia Texas.

At the Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin, UST's Jonathan Miller shot a 2-over-par 218 over three rounds to win the individual event by six strokes and lead the Celts to a first-place finish. The senior from Beaumont, Texas, carded rounds of 75, 69, and 74.

With Miller leading the way with a 3-under-par 69 in Sunday's second round, the Celts as a team shot 7-over-par 295 during the round, the lowest team score for a single round for any of the seven teams at the event.

With a two-round total of 603 on Sunday, the Celts held off a late charge from LeTourneau. The YellowJackets climbed two places Monday to finish second, seven strokes behind UST's final score of 918.

Miller eagled two consecutive holes and birdied four more in the second round to card his 3-under-par 69. He needed only three shots to eagle the 591-yard par-5 fifth hole, the longest at Grey Rock. He followed that showing by with another eagle on the sixth hole, a 323-yard par-4.

For the event, Miller carded 10 birdies, five on par-5 holes, three on par-4 holes, and two par-3's. His par-3 eagle on hole five in the second round came after he bogied the hole earlier in the day's first round. Miller birdied the 509-yard, par-5 11th hole in each of the three rounds.

Greg Dupont also placed in the event's top 15, as he tied for 14th with a three-round score of 235. He recovered from shooting 10-over-par 82 in Sunday's first round to card a 74 in the day's second round.

Cade Kiser shot a 237 for the Celts, while Patrick Smetek shot a 238 for UST. Smetek helped lead the Celts to a team score of 308 after first round thanks to shooting a 73 in Sunday's first 18.

Henry Phavorachit shot a 239 for the Celts; he too shot a 73 on Sunday, carding his 1-over-par in the day's second round.

The Celts return to action Monday, April 18, when the begin play at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship. The two-day event will be held at the Vaaler Creek Golf Club in Blanco, Texas.
