Miller's Top Ten Finish Leads Celts at SCAC Tournament

BLANCO, Texas – The University of St. Thomas men's golf team concluded play at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship tournament Tuesday.

At the Vaaler Creek Golf Club, the Celts as a team shot 300 in Tuesday's final round, their best round of the tournament. UST's three-round total of 912 placed fifth at the tournament as the Celts moved past UDallas to finish fifth at the tournament.

Jonathan Miller led the Celts with a final-round score of par-72, one of three rounds of 73 or better by a UST golfer Tuesday. A senior from Beaumont, Texas (Monsignor Kelly), Miller also carded a 72 in Monday's opening round and finished sixth individually with a three-round score of 2-over-par 218.

Miller parred 14 holes in the final round and also birdied a pair of par-5 holes. The par-5's were essential to Miller's success at the tournament, as he tied with Schreiner's Austin O'Brien to record 7-under-par over his 12 opportunities on par-5 holes during the course of the tournament.

UST's Henry Phavorachit, a senior from Missouri City, Texas (Elkins) carded a 73 in the final round, giving him a three-round score of 227, which tied for 12th on the individual leaderboard. He turned in two rounds of 77 on Monday.

Phavorachit birdied four holes Tuesday, three of those on par-4 holes. He and Miller birdied nine holes apiece during the tournament, which tied for seventh among all players.

Cade Kiser finished a three-round score of 234, carding an 82 Tuesday after turning in rounds of 75 and 77 for the Celts on Monday. UST's Patrick Smetek fired a 73 Tuesday to finish the tournament with a score of 236. Smetek birdied four holes in the final round, including three in a row on the 12th (par-3), 13th, and 14th holes (both par-4).

Greg Dupont (251) and Jackson Murff (256) also competed for the Celts during the tournament.

Southwestern (Texas) won the SCAC championship with a three-round score of 889, overtaking Trinity (Texas) by one stroke on the final day of the event.
