Celts take fifth place at SCAC Championship meet

SAN ANTONIO – The University of St. Thomas women's track and field team concluded competition at the 2022 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship meet Sunday.

For the second time in as many days, Celt sprinters claimed individual event championships and provided the points in the team standings of the meet. UST finished fifth with 44 points.

 

UST's Christina Stinson won the women's 400-meter championship as she broke the tape at the finish line with a personal-best time of 57.75 seconds. A freshman from Cypress, Texas, Stinson won the event by a full 1.25 seconds and earned 10 points for her team.

 

The Celts earned nine points in the 100-meter dash as three UST sprinters placed in the top six. Ny'Cierra Hinton took second place with a time of 12.40 seconds, earning eight points. Kaela Sawyers took fifth place (two points) with a time of 12.50 seconds, and Jamaya Coaster finished in sixth place out of 25 competitors with a time of 12.53 seconds.

 

All three sprinters in the 100-meter dash were also part of the relay that won the 4x100-meter relay championship Friday, along with teammate Clydajia Williams.

 

In the 100-meter hurdles, Sophia Delgado turned in a season-best performance by finishing in 16.02 seconds, good for fifth place in the event. Delgado also finished seventh in the 400-meter hurdles.

 

The 2022 SCAC championship marked the first time in UST history the Celt women scored points and claimed individual event championships at the conference meet.
