Celts Set Season Bests to Conclude UIW Invitational

SAN ANTONIO – Several members of the women's track and field team at the University of St. Thomas set season bests Saturday during the final day of the Incarnate Word Invitational.

Three Celts sprinters recorded their best times of the season in the 100-meter dash, with freshman Ny'Cierra Hinton leading the way. The freshman from Waco, Texas, ran the dash in 12.36 seconds, breaking the tape in her section of eight runners. With that time, Hinton led all NCAA Division III competitors at the meet and finished second overall behind Lamyia Styles of NCAA Division I program Texas A&M–Corpus Christi.

Hinton finished ahead of nine Division I sprinters at the event. Her 12.36 time in the event is now tied for first among Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference runners this season.

In the same event, UST's Kaela Sawyers and Jamaya Coaster also placed themselves among the SCAC's top six sprinters in the 100-meter dash. Sawyers turned in a time of 12.56 seconds, which ranked ninth at the meet (better than six Division I competitors) and was third among Division III sprinters. She now ranks fourth in the SCAC.

With a time of 12.70 seconds, Coaster finished 12th at the meet (fifth out of 16 Division III competitors) and ranks sixth in the SCAC this season.

Coaster, Hinton, and Sawyers teamed with Clydajia Williams to lead the Celts in the 4x100-meter relay. The quartet's time of 49.52 seconds was the best among the four Division III teams in the event and finished fifth overall at the meet.

The Celts' time of 49.52 seconds in the event now leads the SCAC, ahead of Texas Lutheran and Trinity, which also turned in their best times of the season at UIW Invitational.

UST's Sophia Delgado gave her best showing of the season in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 16.02 seconds, which now ranks third in the SCAC. Her time placed 12th out of 25 at the meet, and second out of 10 Division III hurdlers. Delgado finished ahead of four NAIA hurdlers and one NCAA Division I competitor.

In the 400-meter dash, Christina Stinson turned in a time of 59.42 seconds for the Celts, which ranked sixth out of 20 teams and second among Division III competitors. Already owning the top time in the event in the SCAC this season, Stinson placed ahead of two Division I runners at the meet.

The Celts have one final regular-season meet to prepare for SCAC Championships on April 23 and 24 in San Antonio. UST will be in action Friday, April 15th, when they will compete at Stephen F. Austin's Earl Miner Invitational.
