Celt Women Compete in Final Tuneup Before SCAC Championships

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The University of St. Thomas women's track and field team competed at Stephen F. Austin State's Earl Milner Invitational on Friday in the Celts' final tuneup before their conference meet this coming weekend.

Jocelyn Olivarez' performance in the 800-meter run led the Celts in Nacogdoches. The freshman from Pasadena, Texas (Dobie) completed the race with a personal-best time of 2 minutes, 28.46 seconds.

The second NCAA Division III runner to cross the finish line, Olivarez finished 16th out of 30 competitors at the meet, ahead of five runners from NCAA Division I programs. Her time now ranks ninth in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

In the 1,500-meter run, Martina Caridad and Grace Leduc finished second and third, respectively among Division III runners in a field that mostly consisted of Division I and II competitors. Caridad finished with a time of 5:34.49 (20th overall), while Leduc completed the race with a time of 5:37.97 (22nd overall).

Four different Celt sprinters competed in the 100-meter dash at the meet, with Christina Stinson turning in a season-best time of 12.84 seconds. Her time now ranks her 11th in the SCAC.

UST's Jamaya Coaster and Kaela Sawyers both completed the race with a time of 12.79 seconds, which placed behind only one other Division III sprinter. The pair finished ahead of three Division I sprinters and four sprinters from the NJCAA's Division I.

Ny'Cierra Hinton ran the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.83 seconds Friday. Hinton and Sawyers and Coaster have three of the top six places in the SCAC standings in the event. Hinton's time of 12.36 seconds last week at the UIW Invitational last week is the top SCAC performance at sea level this season, and ranks second overall in the conference.

The Celts will head to San Antonio this weekend for the SCAC Championship meet. The two-day event will begin Saturday, April 23.
