Softball Sweeps LeTourneau in Saturday Doubleheader

Softball picked up two wins against LeTourneau this Saturday afternoon. After a full day of action, the Celts won the first game 6-3 and the second one 8-4.

Game 1: UST 6 LETU 3

St. Thomas struck first in the opening inning when Mallarie Munson's double drove in Jaelyn Simmons, giving them an early 1-0 lead. However, LeTourneau responded in the second inning with Jenna Carter's double, bringing home Leighton Landreth and Mickenzie Murry, putting LeTourneau ahead 2-1.

LeTourneau extended their lead in the fifth inning when Kylie Grisham's fielder's choice allowed Maddie Flanery to score, making it 3-1.

St. Thomas mounted a comeback in the sixth inning, starting with Isabelle Charles's sacrifice fly, bringing home Rebecca Archibald. Gabby Davila's single, coupled with a throwing error, allowed Chloe Bennett to score, tying the game at 3-3. Lindsey Gonzalez then reached on an error, scoring Munson, and Celeste Luna's single brought home Davila, giving St. Thomas a 5-3 lead.

In the seventh inning, St. Thomas added an insurance run when Chloe Bennett reached on a fielder's choice, and Archibald scored on a throwing error by the shortstop, extending St. Thomas's lead to 6-3.

Allison Hughes pitched a complete game for St. Thomas, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out two, earning her team the win. Kirstin Ferguson and Laney Taylor pitched for LeTourneau, but they couldn't contain St. Thomas's offense in the crucial sixth inning.

Game 2 UST 8 LETU 4

In a thrilling softball matchup between St. Thomas (Tex.) and LeTourneau on February 24, 2024, St. Thomas emerged victorious with a final score of 8-4.

St. Thomas took an early lead in the second inning when Delayne Moreno reached on an error, allowing Gabby Davila to score. A throwing error by the right fielder enabled Isabelle Charles to score as well. Rebecca Archibald's single extended St. Thomas's lead to 3-0.

LeTourneau answered back in the third inning with Payton Bauer's RBI single, narrowing the gap to 3-1. However, St. Thomas added another run in the third when Mallarie Munson reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Jaelyn Simmons.

In the sixth inning, Archibald's single and a throwing error by the shortstop allowed Lindsey Gonzalez to score, extending St. Thomas's lead to 5-1. A throwing error by the third baseman in the same inning allowed Archibald to score, making it 6-1.

LeTourneau fought back in the bottom of the sixth, with Alexa Neilon's RBI single bringing in Maddie Flanery, cutting the deficit to 6-2.

St. Thomas secured the win in the seventh inning with two more runs. Moreno drew a bases-loaded walk, bringing home Taylor Hollins, and Grace Torres followed with another walk, allowing Davila to score.

LeTourneau attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, with Lilly Longoria's single driving in two runs, but it wasn't enough to overcome St. Thomas's lead.

Victoria Sossaman pitched a complete game for St. Thomas, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out five. Hailee Leger started for LeTourneau but was tagged with the loss, giving up six runs (one earned) over 5.2 innings.
