Celts Drop Doubleheader Against McMurry

St. Thomas faced off with McMurry in a non-conference doubleheader this Friday afternoon. After two hard faught games, the Celts finished 0-2 on the day against the Warhawks.

Game 1: UST 4 MCM 7

St. Thomas got off to a strong start, with Chloe Bennett's impressive home run in the first inning, driving in Jaelyn Simmons and putting St. Thomas ahead 2-0 early on.

However, McMurry responded in the fourth inning, tying the game at 2-2 with a clutch hit from Reaghan Staehely and a fielder's choice RBI by Sabrina Graf.

St. Thomas regained the lead in the fifth inning when Chloe Bennett singled to right field, bringing in Rebecca Archibald and advancing Jaelyn Simmons to third, making it 3-2. Bennett then advanced to second, allowing Simmons to score and extending St. Thomas' lead to 4-2.

McMurry fought back in the bottom of the fifth, as Miranda Soileau's sacrifice fly and a daring steal of home by Morgan Faubion tied the game once again at 4-4.

In the sixth inning, McMurry seized control of the game with Jade Dickens's timely single, driving in Angelica Abila and Aliyah Tanguma, giving McMurry a 6-4 lead. A wild pitch later in the inning allowed Dickens to score, extending McMurry's lead to 7-4.

Despite St. Thomas' efforts, they couldn't overcome McMurry's late offensive surge.

Game 2: UST 0 MCM 1

Both teams battled fiercely on the field, with strong pitching performances keeping the game scoreless through the first five innings. St. Thomas' Victoria Sossaman and McMurry's Baylee Fulps showcased their skills, shutting down opposing batters and keeping the game deadlocked.

It wasn't until the bottom of the sixth inning that McMurry broke the deadlock. Trista Brown delivered a sacrifice fly, allowing Morgan Faubion to cross the plate and give McMurry a crucial 1-0 lead.

St. Thomas attempted to mount a comeback in the seventh inning but fell short.

Both teams displayed impressive defensive efforts, with solid performances from players on both sides. Despite the loss, St. Thomas' Victoria Sossaman pitched a stellar game, allowing just one run on five hits over six innings of work.

Ultimately, McMurry's timely offense and strong pitching proved to be the difference-maker in this hard-fought contest, earning them a well-deserved victory over St. Thomas.
