Softball Splits Doubleheader with Houston Victoria

Softball split their doubleheader with UH-Victoria this Saturday afternoon. After dropping game one 9-1, the Celts responded in game two, edging out the Jaguars 5-4.

Game One: UST 1 UHV 9

Houston-Victoria got off to a strong start in the first inning, capitalizing on an error by St. Thomas to take an early lead. They continued their offensive onslaught in the second inning to extend their lead to 6-0.

St. Thomas managed to get on the scoreboard in the third inning, with G. Davila's fielder's choice bringing in a run. However, Houston-Victoria responded swiftly, adding three more runs in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach.

St. Thomas struggled to contain Houston-Victoria's potent offense, with pitchers Victoria Sossaman and Lauren Trott facing difficulties against the relentless hitting from the opposing team.

Game Two: UST 5 UHV 4

St. Thomas got on the board early in the first inning when Chloe Bennett's single drove in Jaelyn Simmons, giving them an initial lead. However, Houston-Victoria quickly responded in the bottom of the inning, with K. Lopez's sacrifice fly and C. Blinka's single putting them ahead 2-1.

The game remained tight as both teams battled for control. In the third inning, St. Thomas tied the game at 2-2 after Haley Lupian reached on an error, allowing Delayne Moreno to score. They then regained the lead when Bennett's single brought Lupian home.

St. Thomas extended their lead in the fourth inning, capitalizing on an error to score another run and make it 4-2. Despite Houston-Victoria narrowing the gap to 4-3 in the fifth inning due to an error, St. Thomas responded in the top of the fifth when Gabby Davila reached base on an error, allowing Simmons to score.

Houston-Victoria fought hard to mount a comeback, scoring another run in the seventh inning to bring the score to 5-4. However, St. Thomas managed to hold on defensively, securing the win.

Pitcher Allison Hughes played a crucial role for St. Thomas, delivering a strong performance in the circle and keeping Houston-Victoria's offense in check. Despite facing some pressure late in the game, Hughes remained composed and closed out the victory.

With this win, St. Thomas improves their record to 3-4, showcasing their resilience and determination on the field.
