Softball won its series opener with Southwestern University this Friday evening. After seven hard fought innings of softball, the Celts came out on top 5-4.

It was a quiet first inning from both teams as neither could score a run. However in the top half of the second inning, St. Thomas got on the board first with an error by the Southwestern catcher. From there, the Celts added to their lead in third inning as another error allowed Chloe Bennett to come home, making the score 2-0. However, when it looked like the lead was secured, Southwestern answered with four runs in the home half of the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead. Down to their last nine outs, St. Thomas had to make something happen. It was Delayne Moreno who answered the call with a clutch two rbi single up the middle to tie the game and four runs apiece. Then in the sixth, a Chloe Bennett single brought home a run to secure the 5-4 victory. 

In the circle, Bailey Tisdale got the start and allowed four runs on five hits in 3.2 innings of action. Addison Lehew came in relief to finish the inning before Allison Hughes closed out the last three innings to get the win. Hughes blanked the Pirates, preventing them from scoring a run and notching five strikeouts.

Up next, softball wraps up its three game series with SCAC foe Southwestern tomorrow! First pitch is set for 1 PM game of the doubleheader as St. Thomas goes for another SCAC sweep!
