Celts Defeat Trinity 5-1 to Take Three-Game Series

SAN ANTONIO – The University of St. Thomas softball concluded its softball series at Trinity with a 5-1 victory Saturday, giving the Celts a series win after splitting Friday's doubleheader.

Sydneye Cromwell went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs to lead the Celts at the plate, while Lindsey Longuet pitched a two-hitter and did not allow any earned runs to the host Tigers.

With the win, the Celts (20-12, 12-6 SCAC) pulled to within a game of second-place Trinity in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference softball standings.

Cromwell opened the scoring for the Celts with an RBI single that scored Jaelyn Simmons in the top of the first. In the third, Cromwell's two-run home run that also plated Mallarie Munson broke a 1-1 tie; she added another RBI single in the fifth inning that again scored Simmons.

Delayne Moreno added a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth that scored Taylor Le.

Meanwhile, Longuet did not allow a hit after the second inning. She retired the Tigers in order in the third, fifth, and sixth innings, while finishing the game with five strikeouts.

Friday's doubleheader saw the Tigers take game one by a score of 1-0 (Box score). Trinity (18-18, 13-5 SCAC) scored their lone run in the fifth inning when Longuet hit Jessica Lloyd with a pitch while the bases were loaded.

Longuet took the hard-luck loss in Friday's opener, tossing six complete innings and scattering five hits while striking out three and allowing a single unearned run.

The Celt bats woke up in the second game Friday as UST scored pounded out 14 hits in a 6-2 victory (Box Score). Simmons went 3-for-3 with two walks while scoring thrice. Her one RBI came when she homered in the game's first at-bat.

Le also went 3-for-3 in the game while recording an RBI and scoring a run. Munson, Addison Lehew, Kayleigh Deakle and Ariana Brown each had two hits in the game.

Marissa Vasquez pitched four innings and earned the win for the Celts in Friday's second game. Munson tossed the final three innings and earned her first save of the season.

The Celts return to action Saturday, April 23, when they host Centenary (La.) in a doubleheader at the West University Softball Association fields. First pitch in the opener is scheduled for noon. UST and Centenary will conclude their series the following day with a 12 p.m. game.
