Distance Runners Highlight Celts at Day One of SCAC Championships

Men's Track and Field competed at day one of the SCAC Championships this Saturday. After a full day of SCAC action, the Celts were competitive with other programs in various events.

Distance:

Starting the day off right for St. Thomas was freshman Drew Cunningham in the 10k. Cunningham finished 9th place and smashed the previous school record with a new time of 34:01.08. 

Next, in the 3000m steeplechase, James Urbina held his previous second place spot with a time of 10:00.02 and added eight points to the Celts' team score. 

In the 800m run, two Celts finished in the top ten. Sophomore Jacob Smith highlighted the event with his new personal best clocking 1:56.59 and finishing second place. Then not far behind was Jhancarlos Carpio who finished at 2:00.03, good for seventh place. Both men combined for ten points added to the Celts' team score. Will Brisco also competed and logged 2:05.63 to lock in 15th place.

Sprints:

In the 4x100 relay, the quartet of Victor Davis, Carlos Cazares, Jacolby Mattox, and Terrance Veal clocked a time of 44.08, good for fifth place and four team points. 

Finally, the last day one event for St. Thomas was the 200m dash. Bryce McIntyre led the Celts finishing second place with a time of 21.56 and scored eight points. Also scoring was Kashala Kapyamba clocking 22.13 at eighth place, and scoring a singular point. Also in the race was Victor Davis who clocked 22.49, Eduardo Waller at 22.65, and Terrance Veal at 23 seconds flat. All three finished 15th, 17th, and 20th respectively.  

Field:

Bryce McIntyre was the lone Celt to compete in long jump. Leaping as far as 6.91m, McIntyre finished second place and added seven points to the team score.

At the conclusion of day one, the Celts finished in fifth place with 38 points, 12 points out from fourth place team Texas Lutheran.
