Celts Set Season Bests at First Day of SCAC Championships

SAN ANTONIO – The University of St. Thomas men's track and field team is in fifth place after the first day of the 2022 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship meet, which began Saturday.

The Celts are currently in fifth place at the halfway point of the meet with 14 points, five points behind Southwestern (Texas).

UST earned four points apiece from a trio of fourth-place finishes and a fifth-place finish from James Urbina in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Urbina earned two points for the Celts by finishing with a time of 10 minutes, 18.37 seconds.

The Celts earned four points in the first event of the day, the 10,000-meter race. Jaxon Boyd finished in fourth place, completing the race in 34:25.23.

Bryce McIntyre accounted for eight of UST's points during the first day. He set a personal best in the long jump with 7.09 meters (23 feet, 3.25 inches), good for a fourth-place finish.

In the 4-by-100 meter relay, McIntyre teamed with Boyd, Eduardo Waller, and Makale Mingo to finish in fourth place with a time of 42.45 seconds.

Three other team bests were set by the Celts on Saturday. McIntyre and Waller ran the 200-meter dash in identical times of 22.22 seconds, their best finishes of the season. In the 800-meter run, Will Brisco set a personal best with a time of 2:02.91.

Trinity (Texas) and Texas Lutheran are tied for first place headed into the final day of competition.

Sunday's competitions will be streamed on Trinity University's YouTube channel.
