Sprinters spring Celts to fourth-place finish at SCAC Championships

SAN ANTONIO – The University of St. Thomas men's track and field team concluded their season Sunday at the 2022 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship meet.

The Celts finished fourth at the overall meet with a total of 41 points. UST scored 27 points on the second day of competition thanks to a pair of second-place finishes that allowed the Celts to climb past Southwestern (Texas).

Matthew Hicks contributed to both of UST's second-place finishes Sunday. He finished as the runner-up as one of only two competitors to clear a height of 1.92 meters (~6 feet, 3.5 inches), his best height during the event.

A freshman from Katy, Texas, Hicks was also part of the men's 4x400-meter relay team that finished second behind Trinity (Texas). Eduardo Waller, Bryce McIntyre, Hicks, and Terrence Veal finished the race with a time of 3 minutes, 20.76 seconds).

McIntyre and Waller both placed among the top five in the 400-meter dash. Finishing with third with a time of 49.21 seconds, McIntyre set a new personal best in the event, and his second personal best of the meet.

Waller finished fifth with a time of 49.63 seconds in the 400-meter race, while Veal placed eighth with a time of 50.51 seconds.

In the 100-meter dash, Josiah Akpan earned two points for the Celts with his fifth-place finish in a time of 11.04 seconds. The Celts also gained a point in the 1,500-meter run when Jhancarlos Carpio finished sixth with a time of 4:03.69.

Trinity won the event with 225 points, followed by Texas Lutheran with 204 points.

The Celts climbed three places from finish at their inaugural trip to SCAC meet last season. UST scored seven points in their 2021 debut.
