Last night at the end of the year UST Athletics all-sports banquet, Women's Tennis student-athletes Alejandra Lopez and Anamaria Gonzalez were selected as the Marjorie Evans Female Student Athletes of the Year. This is the first time the department has selected two winners for this award.
In 2007 the University of St. Thomas longtime supporter Marjorie Evans gave the initial financial gift that launched UST Volleyball and ultimately the University of St. Thomas Athletic Department. Ms. Evans has continued to support the Celts, in particular, our women's athletic programs. It is because of her that we dedicate the female student-athlete of the year award in her name.
The University of St. Thomas Athletic Department honors a female student-athlete every year based on their excellence in competition, in the classroom and within the UST community. This is the first year that we have chosen to honor two winners for the 2023 Marjorie Evans- Female Student-Athlete of the Year award.
Alejandra Lopez and Anamaria Gonzalez are special because they belong to the same team. They have teamed up to amass a total of 74 wins. These two tennis seniors are the foundation of the program. Both joined the team in the first year of competition and have led the team to the SCAC Tournament in every season so far. Together, they have even achieved two all-SCAC doubles honors. Most recently in 2022, they made it all the way to the Quarterfinals of the Championship Draw at the ITA regional, the largest tennis tournament of the year.
Alejandra Lopez was the 2021 SCAC Women's Tennis Elite 19 Recipient. She was the first-ever tennis signee, and in four years has amassed 18 singles wins and 18 doubles wins. Her coach writes "she has an all-court game which makes her very versatile. She is also a leader with her words and actions." Please congratulate Alejandra Lopez on being named Co Female Student-Athlete of the Year.
Anamaria Gonzalez won the very first match in program history. She also is the current leader in wins, winning 19 singles and 19 doubles matchesl. She also won the ITA Championship Draw Consolation. Her coach describes her as "a committed player who always shows up to practice and matches ready to compete."
