Celts take fourth place at SCAC Tournament

KERRVILLE, Texas – The University of St. Thomas women's tennis team concluded their 2022 season at the postseason Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament.

The Celts were defeated 5-0 in Saturday's semifinal round by Trinity (Texas), which was ranked No. 4 in the NCAA Division III West Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. UST then fell 5-2 to Colorado College in the tournament's third-place match Sunday.

SEMIFINALS: Trinity 5, Celts 0

Anamaria Gonzalez and Alejandra Lopez gave Trinity's Cate Cushing and Megan Flores one of their toughest doubles matches of the season in flight one. The most competitive pairing of the match required a tiebreaker, which was ultimately won by Trinity 8-7 (8-4).

In flight two, Trinity's Olivia Kim and Ruth Hill turned away UST's Alyssa Davila and Jenny Reynolds by an 8-1 score.

In singles play, Trinity got a 6-0, 6-0 win in flight four, and advanced to the championship match after Hill defeated Davila 6-1, 6-1 in flight three.

THIRD PLACE: Colorado College 5, Celts 2

The Celts took two of the three available doubles points before No. 17 Colorado College claimed the match in singles play.

Both UST points went to the Celts by scores of 8-1. Flight one saw Gonzalez and Lopez power past Maddy Meister and Olivia Dicks. In flight two, Davila and Reynolds turned away Gigi Jensen and Malia Rivera.

Gonzalez and Lopez gave their opponents a difficult time in singles play. Flight one saw Gonzalez fight hard in a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Christina Heffron. Meister defeated Lopez 6-4, 6-3 in flight two.
