Celts Fall to SCAC Opponent Southwestern

HOUSTON – The women's tennis team at the University of St. Thomas concluded the home portion of their schedule Saturday against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Southwestern (Texas).

At the Memorial Park Tennis Center, the visiting Pirates took the match by a 9-0 team score.

Alejandra Lopez had the longest, most competitive day for the Celts. The junior from Puerto Rico and League City's Clear Creek High School teamed with Anamaria Gonzalez in flight one doubles play and looked strong in an 8-3 loss to Nina Mitrofanova and Lydia Lee.

In singles play, Lopez battled competitively in both sets against Taylor Despriet in flight two. Despriet was ultimately victorious by scores of 6-3, 6-3.

Flight two in doubles play also featured a competitive match for UST's Alyssa Davila and Jenny Reynolds. The pair gave a solid performance in a match won 8-3 by Alli Ziehm and Emma Kesterson.

The Celts return to action in a couple of weeks with a weekend stretch of three matches in three days during a trip to the north part of Texas. The Celts open the weekend Friday, April 22, when they visit LeTourneau in Longview for a 12 p.m. match.

UST will play its final SCAC match Saturday, April 23, at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. That match is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start. The team will then conclude its regular season the following day at East Texas Baptist in Marshall, with the match scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
