Celts roll past Schreiner to open SCAC Tournament

KERRVILLE, Texas – The University of St. Thomas women's team advanced to the second round of the postseason Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament Friday with a 5-0 win over host Schreiner.

The Celts (6-8) faced spirited competition from Schreiner in doubles play but ultimately prevailed in all three matches. With the win, the Celts advanced to the second round of the SCAC tournament for the second time in the three-year history of the program.

Two of the three doubles matches went to tiebreakers. In flight one, UST's Anamaria Gonzalez and Alejandra Lopez defeated Hannah Reyna and Victoria Morales 8-7, winning the tiebreaker 7-3.

Flight three saw UST's Karissa Guzman and Regina Lopez turn away Blair Villarreal and Rachel Rompel by 8-7, with the UST duo also winning the tiebreaker 7-3.

In flight two, Alyssa Davila and Jenny Reynolds claimed the first point of the day for the Celts as they defeated Katelyn Ruiz and Stefanie Madamba 8-6.

Needing only two points from singles play to take the match, the Celts got quick wins from Reynolds and Guzman in flights nos. 4 and 5, respectively. Reynolds cruised past Ruiz 6-0, 6-0 in flight four, while Guzman defeated Rompel 6-1, 6-1.

As the No. 4 team in the SCAC Tournament, the Celts will face top-seeded Trinity (Texas) in Saturday's second round. That match is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
