Celts end season at SCAC Tournament

KERRVILLE, Texas – The University of St. Thomas men's tennis team concluded their 2022 season at the postseason Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament.

The Celts were defeated 5-0 in Saturday's semifinal round by Trinity (Texas), which was ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division III West Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. UST then fell 5-1 to Colorado College in the tournament's third-place match Sunday.

SEMIFINALS: Trinity 5, Celts 0

The Celts fought hard but came away empty-handed against the toughest opponent on their 2022 schedule.

Juanrodrigo Lopez and Jace Ware led the Celts in doubles play as they took three games from opponents Christian Settles and Hao Nguyen in flight one.

In the singles competition, UST's Carson Steele was the only Celt to take a game in the first set of his match; he dropped his opening set to Settles 6-2 in flight four. The matches in flights five and six were the first to finish and give Trinity its necessary five points to advance to the conference championship match.

THIRD PLACE: Colorado College 5, Celts 1

Lopez finished his collegiate career on a winning note as he and Ware claimed UST's point with an 8-5 win over Jack Delafield and Andrew Kaelin in doubles flight one. Steele and Jeremiah Hoover gave Colorado College's Nate Beerman and Jacob Adas a competitive match in flight three, which went to the Tigers by a score of 8-5.

A pair of 6-0, 6-0 matches in flights five and six of singles play went to Colorado College. Steele's 6-2, 6-1 setback to Beerman in flight four gave the Tigers the victory.
