Celts fall at LeTourneau to open weekend road trip

LONGVIEW, Texas – The University of St. Thomas men's tennis team lost at LeTourneau on Friday to open a three-match road trip to Northeast Texas.

At the LeTourneau University Tennis Courts, the Celts fell 8-1 to their hosts in a match that was closer than the final team score indicated.

 

The Celts earned their lone point of the day in doubles play when Tyler Head and Jace Ware defeated Rodrigo Vazquez and Miles Grubbs 8-2 in flight one. It was each player's second win in three doubles matches, and the first time Head and Ware teamed up against a fellow Division III opponent this season.

 

UST's Carson Steele and Andrew True lost their flight two match to Ryan Holloway and Nathan Schmidt 8-1. Flight three saw LeTourneau's Jonah McGinty and Andres Urretia turn away the Celts' Jeremiah Hoover and Jason Clark 8-0.

 

In singles play, Vazquez defeated Head by scores of 6-4, 6-4 in flight one. Flight two saw Holloway turn away Ware by the same 6-4, 6-4 scores.

 

Grubbs defeated UST's Carson Steele 6-0, 6-2 in flight four, while Urretia outlasted Hoover 6-0, 6-2 in flight five. LeTourneau's Jeffrey Golladay defeated Clark 6-0, 6-0 in flight six.

 

UST will play its final Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match Saturday, April 23, at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. That match is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start. The team will then conclude its regular season the following day at East Texas Baptist in Marshall, with the match scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
