
IRVING, Texas – The University of St. Thomas women's basketball team closed out a remarkable season with a hard-fought battle against Trinity University in the SCAC quarterfinals. Despite a strong start, the Celts fell 79-73 on Friday afternoon at the University of Dallas.
St. Thomas came out strong, opening the game on a 15-5 run, highlighted by a layup from Macie Whitfield late in the first quarter. However, Trinity responded in the second quarter with a 12-4 run, eventually tying the game at 19-19. The Tigers' hot shooting continued as they hit 62.5 percent from the field in the quarter, allowing them to take control heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, Trinity extended its lead to 41-31, but the Celts refused to back down. A 13-0 run capped by an Amyia Bowie three-pointer gave St. Thomas a 50-49 lead heading into the final period. The Celts maintained their momentum early in the fourth, with an Audrey Hernandez three-pointer pushing their lead to 55-51. However, Trinity responded with a 13-4 run to reclaim the advantage. Despite cutting the deficit to just one point on two occasions, St. Thomas was unable to complete the comeback.
The Celts had several standout performances. Ravyn Ellis led with 16 points, six rebounds, and three steals, while Hernandez added 16 points on an efficient 6-of-7 shooting, including four three-pointers. Bowie contributed across the board with 14 points, six rebounds, eight assists, and four steals, and Kenna Gibson finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.
Though the loss marks the end of their postseason run, the Celts finish the season with a 14-10 overall record. They made program history with an 11-game win streak, the longest ever for UST women's basketball, marking a complete turnaround for the 2024-25 campaign.
