Women's Basketball picked up a huge conference victory Monday night, downing Southwestern 63-54. Alexya Castillo led the Celts with a season-high 23 points, nailing 50 percent of her three-pointers.
St. Thomas would dig themselves in hole to open the game, allowing the Pirates to outscore them 19-11 in the first quarter. However, the Celts would open up the second period with an 18-3 run to erase their deficit and build a six-point lead heading into the break.
An Alexya Castillo layup with 5:45 left in the third quarter would extend the Celts lead to a comfortable ten points. Southwestern, however, wouldn't back down, constructing a run of their own midway through the third quarter, knotting the score up at 46 apiece.
In a back-and-forth fourth quarter, St. Thomas would rely on big shots down the stretch to secure the win. After back-to-back buckets from Castillo and Micayla Hamilton gave the Celts a five-point advantage, they would hang onto this lead until the final buzzer.
Alongside of Castillo, Olivia Anga would lead the Celts in scoring with 18 points. Anga would log her third double-double of the season, grabbing 12 boards in 32 minutes of action.
The Celts will return to The JAAC on Wednesday, February 9th as they host Southwestern.
