Second Quarter surge Propels Celts

Brownwood, Texas - The University of St. Thomas Celts captured their first road win of the season with an 85-73 victory over Howard Payne, pushing their record to 2-0.

In the first quarter, the Celts built a narrow lead, finishing 19-12. They extended their advantage early in the second quarter, moving up 30-17. However, Howard Payne's defense tightened, forcing turnovers and rallying back to bring the game to 39-33 at halftime. The third quarter saw Howard Payne increase pressure, creating missed chances for the Celts and even taking a brief lead. Audrey Hernandez's three-pointer helped St. Thomas regain their footing, but Howard Payne quickly responded, setting up a close final quarter.

With five minutes left, the Celts took control through a series of key plays. Amber Bourgeois sparked the momentum with a three-pointer, adding her 11th point of the night. Amyia Bowie followed with an assist to Joerdan Thomas, who hit a jumper to push the lead. Shortly after, Zoiey Jumawan scored on a layup off another Bowie assist. In the final moments, Kenna Gibson closed with a three-pointer, assisted by Jumawan, helping secure the Celts' 85-73 victory.

Joerdan Thomas led the team with 19 points on an efficient 72.7% shooting and 11 rebounds. Kenna Gibson contributed 18 points, including 4 three-pointers, and three steals, while Amyia Bowie excelled with 13 points and 8 assists. Amber Bourgeois added 12 points, and Audrey Hernandez's crucial three-pointer kept the momentum going.
