Celts Face Division I Huskies in Winter Exhibition

Celts Face Division I Huskies in Winter Exhibition

Women's Basketball competed in the first exhibition of their season against crosstown rival Houston Christian. Despite a 68-41 defeat, St. Thomas showed poise in competing hard against their Division I opponent.

In the first quarter, the Celts struggled to get anything going offensively, going 3-14 on the floor. However, with that quarter behind them, St. Thomas kicked things into gear in the second, hanging with Houston Christian. When halftime hit, the Celts added 11 points to the Huskies' 13, powered by a six-point scoring run and six points from Hayden Morin. Then in the second half, the Huskies only outscored the Celts by eight points 32-24. Led by Morin and Alexya Castillo adding three-pointers, St. Thomas competed in the second half. They also forced 18 Houston Christian turnovers and added nine second-chance points. Yet any chance at a comeback was too late as the first half proved too costly.

Offensively, Hayden Morin continued her strong season tabbing 11 points in the game, while Aaliyah Macias and Nia McGee dished out two assists apiece. Defensively, Jeci Gonzalez notched five rebounds and Amber Bourgeois blocked two shots.

Up next, the Celts have another chance to fine-tune their skills against Division I opponent Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Tune into ESPN+ as the Celts wrap up their exhibitions before returning to SCAC Play.
