SAN ANTONIO – Members of the men's track and field team at the University of St. Thomas improved their conference rankings Saturday during the final day of Incarnate Word Invitational.
Three UST sprinters turned in season-best performances in the 100-meter dash, with Bryce McIntyre leading the trio with a time of 11.06 seconds. McIntyre's time ranked sixth out of 20 Division III competitors at the meet, and now ranks eighth in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Josiah Akpan's time of 11.10 seconds in the dash ranked eighth out of 20 Division III competitors, and 11th this season in the conference. Eduardo Waller ran the dash in 11.19 seconds, which now ranks 16th in the SCAC.
Jhancarlos Carpio completed the 800-meter run with a personal best time of 1 minute, 59.59 seconds. His finish ranked seventh out of the 33 Division III competitors in Saturday's event, and 21 out of 56 total runners. Carpio's time ranks 13th in the conference.
The 400-meter dash saw UST's Terrence Veal finish with a time of 51.94 seconds, good for sixth out of 14 competitors. Veal moved into 11th place in the SCAC rankings.
On the field, Matthew Hicks finished sixth out of 18 competitors (and third among Division III athletes) in the high jump as he cleared a height of 1.9 meters (6 feet, 2.75 inches). Hicks already has the second-highest jump this season in the SCAC, having cleared a height of 1.95 meters.
The Celts have one final regular-season meet to prepare for SCAC Championships on April 23 and 24 in San Antonio. UST will be in action Friday, April 15th, when they will compete at Stephen F. Austin's Earl Miner Invitational.
